In 1631 during the 30 years war, Rothenburg fell to imperial troops under the command of Count Tilly after a bitter four day battle. The town was to be destroyed and the city councillors killed. However, tradition has it that Count Tilly was humored by the welcome drink - a tankard holding over 3 liters (3 quarts) of local wine. He promised leniency if one of the town councillors could drink the whole tankard in one draught. Former town mayor Nusch took up the challenge and saved the town.
Each year at Pentecost, the event is recreated. Hundreds of citizens dress up in 1631 period costumes and take part in the four day festival (starting on Friday) which includes historial processions, dancing and a variety of 30 years war military camps throughout Rothenburg in addition to daily performances of the play "Der Meistertrunk" (The Master Draught).
The play Master Draught is performed daily during Pentecost, during the Imperial City Festival in September, and on selected days in October.
Performed Fridays and some Sundays April through October. The farces of the medieval shoemaker-poet Hans Sachs reflects the rougish humour of his time. Visitors are delighted with the performances of Rothenburg's Hans Sachs players and the lively, rousing melodies of the Hans Sachs music. The "Kaisersaal" in the Rothenburg Town Hall provides the ideal setting.
Performed during Easter, Pentecost, the Imperial City Festival, and during October. Even in the middle ages, sheep farming and the wool trade played important parts in the life of the town. In 1517, the Shepards Guild was granted the priviledge of celebrating Shepard's Day with music and dancing. In remembrance of this custom, every year visitors have several opportunities to see the dance of the colorful couples in the Market Square.
Takes place the first weekend in September. During the three day festival the entire history of the town is brought alive by a thousand participants. Visitors encounter groups of knights, the Royal Riflemen, and hoards of peasants for example. You may witness a medieval trial or suddenly find yourself in the midst of an ancient cattle market -- the illusion seems perfect. Against the thunder of canons and the glow of innumerable fireworks, medieval music and torchlight processions the town sinks into the night only to wake the next day and continue the merry celebrations.
